Software Architect - Data Platform

  • Location: The Hague, NL
  • Department: Engineering

About the job

BBeatgrid is redefining cross-media measurement with breakthrough deep-tech innovation. Brands spend billions on advertising across TV, streaming services, YouTube, radio, podcasts, and other channels. Each platform reports its own results, making it difficult for advertisers to understand who their campaigns reached across media channels and whether they made a difference. Our technology provides an independent view to major platforms and brands, including Google, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and Netflix.

People in our mobile panel run an app on their phone that recognises ads they hear around them, much like Shazam recognises a song. Measuring exposure across channels within the same panel helps advertisers understand how many different people a campaign reached and whether streaming reached audiences that TV missed. Our measurement also helps advertisers understand outcomes such as changes in brand perception and store visits.

As a Software Architect – Data Platform, you’ll build a new data solution on top of our existing platform. You’ll own the architecture from initial design and prototyping through production, building services, pipelines, and tools that deliver Beatgrid’s data at scale to analysts, clients, and AI agents. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys solving complex backend and data problems, evaluating new technologies and turning open-ended ideas into reliable production software.

About you

Responsibilities

  • Design the architecture of the new data platform, including how it integrates with Beatgrid’s existing platform, and document key architectural decisions.
  • Design and build data lake and analytical platform capabilities that support reproducible analysis, large-scale analytical queries and reliable access to historical data.
  • Design and implement AI agent workflows and supporting tools - enabling analysts, clients and AI agents to work with Beatgrid’s data in a reliable and controlled way.
  • Prototype and evaluate technologies and approaches to analytical storage, data processing and agentic workflows, taking solutions through to production.
  • Build new backend services, data pipelines, APIs and tools for AI agents, using Kotlin and Spring Boot where appropriate and selecting additional technologies as beneficial.
  • Design analytical data models and reliable data processes for bringing data from existing databases, streams and archives into the new solution.
  • Design reliable data flows that safely handle duplicates, retries, and historical backfills.
  • Build observability, reliability and operational ownership into new services from the start.
  • Evaluate appropriate technologies for data lakes, analytical processing and AI-powered workflows, ensuring that outputs are grounded in reliable data and can be trusted.
  • Work closely with engineers and technical leadership to make pragmatic architectural and technology decisions and shape the technical direction of the new solution.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, design discussions and practical guidance.

Skills and experience

  • Senior-level backend engineering experience on the JVM, ideally with Kotlin and Spring Boot. Strong Java engineers interested in Kotlin are welcome.
  • A track record of designing and shipping data-intensive systems, including event streaming, messaging, and batch or streaming data processing.
  • Experience building new systems from initial concept through to production: clarifying requirements, testing assumptions, selecting technologies and delivering working software.
  • Strong SQL and data modelling skills, with sound judgement about when to use relational databases and when to choose other storage or processing approaches.
  • Hands-on experience in at least one of the following areas: Data lakes or lakehouses: analytical storage and processing at scale, using technologies such as Parquet, Iceberg, Delta, Athena, Spark or Trino. Production LLM systems: tool calling, data-grounded answers, systematic evaluation and safeguards for reliable behaviour.
  • Experience with AWS and infrastructure as code, preferably Terraform.
  • Pragmatic judgement to explain trade-offs, make decisions and deliver.

 Nice to have

  • Familiarity with statistics or experiment design, including control groups, weighting and measuring effects.
  • Experience with Spring AI, MCP or retrieval-augmented generation.

What’s in it for you

  • Take architectural ownership of a new data and AI solution, with real impact on Beatgrid’s technology direction and influence from initial design through to production.
  • Solve business and engineering problems with real-world data that help global brands understand advertising effectiveness and make measurement more transparent.
  • Work in a small, senior engineering team and join a diverse, international team, where your work and ideas move quickly to production.
  • Work hands-on with modern backend, data and AI technologies and engineering practices, with opportunities to leverage AI-assisted development and automation.
  • Enjoy an office in The Hague with fitness facilities and flexible remote working.
  • Competitive compensation + Employee Stock Option Plan (ESOP) – share in the value you help create and benefit from future growth and exit opportunities.
